Filing For a Marriage License

In order to get a marriage license a couple together, must file an intention of marriage with the Town Clerk's Office and be over the age of 18.  From the information on the intention a license is typed up.  There is a three day waiting period from the date of filing until the license can be released.  If a couple files on a Monday then the license can be picked up any time from Thursday on.  If a couple files on a Tuesday then the license can be picked up any time from Friday on.  A marriage license is valid for sixty days.

As of January 28, 2005 Massachusetts no longer requires that a couple file pre-martial  bloodtest results.

Couples can file anywhere in MA for a marriage license. We advise couples if possible to file where they are getting married, that way down the road if they need copies, they tend to remember where they got married, not where they filed. However, if a couple wants to file here in Town regardless where they are getting married that's fine.  If either person or both people are divorced, no paper work is required, however the divorce must be finalized before they can file.  The couple is signing under the pains of perjury that the divorce is final.

As stated in the opening paragraph, the legal age to marry is 18, however if either person or both people are underage, then a waiver of the age is required through the courts.  Contact the Town Clerk's Office and further information will be given.
