Recycling Events

♦ The Town of Westford will hold a drop off for electronics on Sat. March 27, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Blanchard School parking lot, 14 West Street in Westford.  Chelmsford Residents are welcome to attend.  Click here for more information.

♦Rain Barrels: Chelmsford will again work with the New England Rain Barrel Company to make rain collection barrels available to residents in April 2010.  Details will be available soon - call 978-250-5203.

♥The fluorescent bulb shed will be open Wednesday,April 7, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and by appoinment (weather permitting- call 978-250-5203). Bring burned out fluorescent bulbs to the shed and put the bulbs carefully in the proper container - under no circumstances is it acceptable to leave bulbs outside the shed! Call 978-250-5203 for information. NEW: a small container is outside the Recycling Office (Room 6, Town Offices, 50 Billerica Road) for intact compact fluorescent bulbs ONLY so you don't have to wait for our next shed day for those bulbs.

  • Spring brush drop -off: Sat. April 10, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Bring brush and branches up to 6 feet long and up to 8 inches in diameter.  Chelmsord residents only - bring proof of residency.  Call 978-250-5203 for information.
    Chelmsford's 2010 HHW day will be held on June 12, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the lower lot behind the Town Offices at 50 Billerica Road (enter from Route 110 between the ball fields).
  • ELECTRONICS/APPLIANCES/TIRES RECYCLING PROGRAM: Chelmsford has a fee based program for curbside collection of CRTs, TVs, monitors, other electronics, appliances (both freon and non-freon), tires, and other large metal items. The contractor will be in Town every two weeks; you will pay the contractor directly and schedule your collections. The contractor is Appliance Recyclers, Inc.   • Other options: for electronics and small appliances: the Town of Westford holds several fee based electronics drop-offs each year.  Chelmsford residents are welcome at these events.Contact the Recycling Office for upcoming Westford dates.  For more information, click here.  Payment is with CASH ONLY.

    Ongoing Recycling drop offs at the Recycling Office: Mercury: Fluorescent bulbs, button batteries, non-digital thermostats and glass thermometers contain mercury. These devices are banned from the trash in Massachusetts (as of May 1, 2008). Improper disposal poisons the environment and risks human health.
    ØFluorescent bulbs: Chelmsford maintains a "Universal waste shed" at the Town Offices, 50 Billerica Road, for the safe disposal of all fluorescent light bulbs (including the little compact fluorescent light bulbs) by Chelmsford residents. The shed is open April through Novemberon the first Wednesday of the month, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.OR BY APPOINTMENT(call 978-250-5203).We will not open the shed when winter weather conditions are so snowy, icy or cold as to prevent opening the shed or to render accessing the shed with fluorescent bulbs dangerous. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS IT PERMISSIBLE TO LEAVE BULBS OUTSIDE THE SHED - SECURITY CAMERA IN USE.
    ØMercury Thermometers - bring them to the Town Offices (Town Clerk, Board of Health or Recycling Office and obtain a digital thermometer in exchange). Mercury thermostats and other mercury containing devices may also be brought to these Offices in the Town Offices for safe disposal.
    ØButton batteries (small silver disc shaped batteries found in hearing aids,some calculators,PDAs,toys,etc.)contain mercury and should be brought to the Recycling Office or to the box at the Senior Center for safe disposal.

    ØCell phone recycling: Bring your cell phone to the Recycling/Solid Waste Office for recycling. Click here for some information on why it is important to recycle cell phones.
    Ø Ink cartridge recycling - bring empty ink cartridges to "Cartridge World" box outside the Recycling Office, Room LL06 at the Town Offices.
    Ø Rechargeable battery recycling: bring your small, household rechargeable batteries to the Recycling Office, Room LL06 at the Town Offices. Each battery must be placed in its own plastic bag (provided at Recycling Office).
