RAIN BARRELS:  The Town will again work with the New England Rain Barrel company to offer discounted rain barrels and "Bio-Orb" composters in the spring of 2010.  Interested residents should purchase the barrels/bins by going to New England Rain Barrel's website or by calling 877-977-3135 by April 9.  Distribution will be on Wednesday, April 14 from 4 to 7.  For more information, call the Recycling Office at 978-250-5203.

Recycling guidelines: Chelmsford must strictly enforce its recycling requirements to reduce contamination. Our hauler is not required to empty bins that contain contaminants. The most common contaminants in our recyclables are: plastic bags, pizza boxes and Styrofoam.  Also, when your paper/cardboard is mixed with your containers, the materials are contaminated because there is no place in the truck to tip mixed recyclables. If you want to know more, check out "Recycling 101: A Guide to Curbside Recycling in Chelmsford."

TRASH LIMITS are being enforced: the CURRENT trash limit is: NO MORE THAN FOUR 32 gallon barrels of trash will be collected each week and barrels may be no larger than 32 gallons in capacity.

Trash and recyclables must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m. - if you are missed because your materials were not out by 6:30 we cannot make the hauler come back. Click here for trash guidelines.

Need recycling bins or stickers? Every single family household is entitled to 2 good condition Chelmsford recycling bins WHILE SUPPLIES AND FUNDS TO RESTOCK BINS LAST- call us at 978-250-5203 to arrange to pick up yours. If you recycle more than will fit in two bins - GREAT! - we'll give you stickers to put on a 32 gallon barrel or similar container which you can use for your bottles, cans, and milk and juice cartons. Remember - you don't have to use recycling bins to recycle in Chelmsford - any sturdy well marked container about the size of a town bin is fine!

If your trash or recycling were missed: Leave it out at the curb and call us at 978-250-5203 by noon the day after your trash/recycling were supposed to be collected (leave a message if you call after hours) telling us:

• What was missed (trash or recycling)
• Your name, address and a telephone number where we will be able to reach you during our office hours (see above)
• For missed trash, we'll need to confirm that your trash was within the town's trash and barrel size limits, and that it did not contain visible recyclables or other waste banned material. Click here for more information.
• For missed recycling, we'll need to confirm that everything was prepared and set out properly.Click here for more information.
• For both trash and recycling, we'll need to confirm that they were at the curb for collection by 6:30 a.m.
• Once we confirm proper and timely set outs, we'll call the hauler and arrange to have them come back. Depending on when we talk to you, your materials may not be picked up until the following day so DO NOT BRING IT BACK IN. Leave it at the curb and call us if it still is not picked up the following day.
• You may call the hauler directly at 888-870-8882 -but please call our office too so that we can be made aware of any ongoing or serious problems.
