Trash collection in Chelmsford: Click here for trash guidelines. (The Town's contracts for trash and recycling collection provide service to residential/municipal properties ONLY - businesses must arrange for their own collections.)
Recycling:
1. When do I recycle: Recycling is collected every other week on your trash day (click here to find out your trash day and see if you're on the blue route or the red route). Recycling must be at the curb by 6:30 on your recycling day- the hauler will not return for late set outs - and even if the hauler usually comes later, they may run their route differently from time to time so you should have your material out by 6:30 a.m.
2. How much can I put out? There is no limit on the amount of recyclable material you may put out each week, but each container may not weigh over 50 lbs.
3. What do I recycle? Review your Chelmsford Recycles flyer to see what to recycle at the curb (on page 4) and click here for information about the most common contaminants to keep OUT of curbside recycling. Do NOT put recyclables out in plastic bags, and do not include plastic bags, plastic wrap or other film plastic in your curbside recycling - click here for information on why! Recycle your plastic bags at area grocery store collection bins.
4. How do I prepare and sort my recyclables? Bottles/cans must be rinsed. Boxes must be flattenened. Chelmsford is a "single stream" recycling community - that means you may put all of your bottles, cans and other recyclable containers in the same bin or barrel with your paper and cardboard. Large pieces of cardboard may be placed underneath or in between your recycling containers - just be sure to put them out in a way that they will not blow away.
5. What kind of container do I use? The best container are trash type barrels with free stickers from the Recycling Office (call 978 250-5203). Barrels hold more than recycling bins, keep your material dry, and the ones with wheels can be rolled to the curb. The hauler allows anything up to 64 gallons in capacity for recycling, but it should not weigh more than 50 pounds when full. You may also use Town recycling bins - sign up and pick bins up at Town offices (each household is entitled to 2 free bins while supplies last).
6. Other: Set recycling containers at least three feet from your trash to make it very clear which is which - do not block sidewalks or access to mailbox. If you followed these guidelines but your recycling was missed, leave it at the curb and call within 24 hours: IPR at 800-933-3128.
Call the Chelmsford Recycling/Solid Waste Office to report any serious or ongoing problems or with ANY questions regarding trash, recycling, composting, etc.: 978-250-5203 (the Office is open part time but we return calls the next business day).
