GCI Purpose:

The purpose of the GCI is to engage Chelmsford businesses in a voluntary effort to recycle/reuse/reduce (the 3 R's) that will:

  1. Benefit the local environment;
  2. Bring attention to the modest steps that can be taken to improve recycling/waste reduction rates - steps that residents can employ in their own daily lives;
  3. Demonstrate to observers that collaboration between business and government in pursuit of a common goal can be workable and fruitful; and
  4. Foster a sense of community by enlisting the participation of businesses, residents and local government in a voluntary, no cost, town-wide cause.

Vision:

GCI will "do" two big things:

  1. Evaluate businesses that wish to receive a GCI "Seal of Approval" for making a commitment to "green tasks"; award the Seals of Approval to participating businesses and maintain an official inventory of which businesses have received such recognition and
  2. Execute a public education/outreach campaign - targeting Chelmsford public schools and young people - around participating businesses and what's being accomplished (i.e.: "Last month, participating businesses contributed X pounds of waste to a GCI compost pile").

 Costs:

Cost to the taxpayers will be $0.  Any costs for the production of GCI decals/certificates/outreach material will be funded with donations from participating businesses.

 Seal of Approval

GCI Seals of Approval will be awarded to participating businesses/organizations using the following parameters:

  • Committing to 5-9 tasks earns a participant a Bronze GCI Seal of Approval.
  • Committing to 10-14 tasks earns a Silver GCI Seal of Approval.
  • Committing to 15+ earns a Gold GCI Seal of Approval.

Participants will receive a GCI certificate/set of decals in recognition for their commitment.  Participant names will also be posted on the Town of Chelmsford web site, and will be recognized at a televised Board of Selectmen meeting.

Seals of Approval can be awarded at anytime. Attention to renewing/upgrading/withdrawing them will be focused around Earth Day.

Organizations are encouraged to submit other activities to the established task list.

 A Director of GCI will be appointed by the Board of Selectmen. That person will work with other volunteers to get the word out, and process candidates for Seals of Approval.
